Man or Flatfish? Johanna Fröhlich Wins Best Poster Award at Women in Science Symposium

Man, baby or flatfish? Visitors to Johanna Fröhlich‘s poster at the 5th Women in Science Symposium were shown a photo of a man holding a baby and asked to pick a label. While flatfish may sound like a joke option, Johanna found in her research on explainable artificial intelligence that neural networks confuse men and flatfish as many pictures in the training dataset in the flatfish class show anglers holding up their catch.

Mix-ups like this are at the heart of Johanna’s research. Her poster, “The Confusion is Real: GRAPHIC –A Network Science Approach to Confusion Matrices in Deep Learning,” presents GRAPHIC, a method that shows how neural networks learn and which classes they confuse. Johanna’s poster received a Best Poster Award.

The symposium brought together researchers from many different fields to discuss current developments in science and technology. Besides the poster session, the program included talks by 15 invited female speakers, flash talks and plenty of time for networking.
