The VDE Young Net organized a trip to Helgoland from April 10 to 12, 2025, which was also attended by Moritz Garkisch from the IDC. The group of 20 early-career professionals and doctoral students met on Thursday morning in Cuxhaven to take the MS Helgoland ferry to the island.

In addition to networking and relaxation, the focus was also on technology on Helgoland. On the first day, the group visited the island’s power plant—now serving only as a backup facility—as well as the combined heat and power plant. The schedule also included a tour of the seawater desalination plant, which converts seawater into drinking water for the island.

On the second day, participants were given a guided tour of a civilian air-raid shelter from World War II, providing insights into Helgoland’s historical significance. On the final day, the group visited the sea rescue cruiser Hermann Marwede, where they had the opportunity to ask the crew detailed technical questions.

At FAU, VDE is represented by the ETG Kurzschluss student group, which also provides information on other local and national VDE events.
