On October 25, the IDC took part in the Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften (LNdW), the region’s bi-annual “Night of Science” event where universities, research institutions, and companies open their doors to the public.

As part of the Graduate School Synthetic Molecular Communications Across Different Scales (SyMoCADS), our team introduced visitors to the fascinating world of Molecular Communication (MC), a field that merges biology, communication theory, and nanotechnology to explore how molecules can be used to transmit information.

Together with an interdisciplinary group of PhD students, Prof. Robert Schober and IDC’s PhD students Teena tom Dieck, Lukas Brand, and Timo Jakumeit guided visitors through a series of interactive demonstrations and hands-on experiments. Guests experienced fluidic and airborne MC testbeds, visualizing how information can travel through chemical signals. Several short talks showcased ongoing SyMoCADS research projects and explained how MC could enable next-generation applications in medicine, environmental monitoring, and synthetic biology.

The exhibit attracted a wide audience, from curious children to seasoned researchers, and inspired lively discussions about the future of communication beyond electronics. The enthusiastic participation and thoughtful questions made the event a true success for everyone involved. We are already looking forward to the next LNdW in 2027!
